Join one of our knowledgeable guides for a tour of Rathfarnham Castle that takes you from the sixteenth century, when building commenced, right up to the present day. Hear the fascinating stories of various members of the Loftus family who lived in the house, and discover the Castle’s second life as a Jesuit seminary.
Access to Rathfarnham Castle is by guided tour. Tours are available from Monday to Sunday during opening hours. Self-guided tours are also available. Groups of more than ten should contact us to book in advance. The average length of a tour is 30-45 minutes. Photography is permitted. For commercial photography please contact us.

We decided to visit this OPW site this afternoon… We went to Reception to meet two lovely young people. We enquired about buying Annual Heritage cards as we find we save a lot of money by getting these cards. No fuss we walked away with two 12 months cards. We did our own tour and it was so well documented and history was also so clear we really enjoyed. Would recommend this site to anyone interested ancient history of this wonderful castle.
This fortified estate is easily accessible from the city center on bus 16. I highly recommend take time to visit the site and walk around the grounds and town. Unlike other homes, this one is sparsely furnished and you can actually appreciate the details in the design of the structure from the moldings to the doors. There is no need to book a guide unless you are a large group. The guide took my friend and I around and it was a special experience.
From the start of our tour of the Castle our tour guide Eoin was informative and explained all aspects of the castle and its past inhabitants in great detail. The grounds are vast and brilliant for walking. Following our walk we had Afternoon Tea in the Tea rooms which was delicious. All very delicious and filling. Staff very attentive and pleasant. This was a very enjoyable experience and one that we highly recommend and will return.
